[:nl]Een artikel over het allereerste gebruik van automatische telefonie in Nederland. Opvallend is de verbazing over dit wonder der techniek en de omstandig uitleg van het gebruik van de kiesschijf.

Ik kwam dit artikel toevallig tegen tussen mijn spullen, op zoek naar iets anders. Het zat tussen archiefstukken die ik van een andere verzamelaar kocht. Het is het originele blad uit 1922.

Het afgebeelde toestel is waarschijnlijk nooit gebruikt in die tijd in Amsterdam. Het is een Siemens & Halske ZBSA 11 uit 1911. Tegen de tijd dat Amsterdam automatiseerde in 1922, was zijn opvolger in productie, de ZBSA 19.

Het Leven Geillustreerd was een weekblad met een sensationele inhoud en maakte veel gebruik van fotoreportages. Fotojournalistiek stond toen nog in de kinderschoenen en dit blad deed indertijd regelmatig veel stof opwaaien. Het blad had een gedurfde journalistieke stijl in combinatie met actuele foto’s en een los taalgebruik.

Vol=automatische toestellen der Amsterdamsche Gemeente-telefoon, die binnenkort hun intrede zullen doen.

Hiernaast een bureautoestel volgens het volautomatische systeem, en hierboven een wandtelefoon, zooals de Gemeentetelefoon in Amsterdam ze in deze maand reeds in sommige stadsgedeelten bij nieuwe geabonneerden zal plaatsen.

Het is niet buitengemeen hoffelijk, en ’t is ook een tikje onrechtvaardig, deenboven wordt het misschien een bevestiging van de stelling dat het nieuwe dáárom nog niet altijd beter is dan ’t oude…. maar tòch is het een feit dat menig ongeduldig handelsman of winkelier of kantoormensch ’n zucht van verlichting zal slaken als hij ’t hoort: we raken de telefoonjuffrouwen kwijt!

Want dàt staat nu te gebeuren.

En hierboven stellen we u voor….de “mechanische telefoonjuffrouwen” in uw telefoon-zelf, zooals wij en u, de één wat vroeger, de ander later, ze nu in Amsterdam in huis zullen krijgen: het “vol-automatische” toestel, dat zelf de verbinding die u wenscht “maakt” zonder zonder tussenkomst van de juffrouw der Centrale, zonder menschelijke bemiddeling….

Binnenkort zal in de centrale Centrum de installatie voor de nummers 6000 tot 8000 gereed zijn. Deze uitbreiding is ingericht voor de aansluiting van de hierboven gekiekte toestellen. Weldra zal dus aan de abonné’s, die een Centrum-nummer moeten krijgen, zooveel mogelijk een dergelijk apparaat gegeven worden. Verder is het de bedoeling successievelijke groepen van 100 nummers van de bedieningstafels, waar de juffrouwen de verbinding tot nu toe bewerkstelligen, af te voeren en voor het vol-automatische systeem in te richten to langzamerhand, als iedere centrale zal zijn “omgebouwd” (om dit Germanisme maar eens te gebruiken) tot dit systeem, alle abonné’s hun eigen telefoonjuffrouw zullen geworden zijn, en de Centrales niets dan zelfwerkende in- en omschakelaars, niets dan machinale, van-zelf-u-aansluiting-gevende instrumenten zullen bevatten.

Aan “Het Leven” is de taak, om de abonné’s die eerlang hun automatische telefoon krijgen, alvast in te lichten over de werking van deze toestellen. Men bekijke de foto’s maar eens: daar is op elk toestel een schijf vóórop gemonteerd, die veerend draait in de gewone richting….mèt de zon mee, zooals het heet. Die schijf bevat 10 gaten, correspondeerend op 10 nummers. Wie nu een ander wil opschellen, heeft altijd vijf malen die schijf te draaien totdat de vinger de nok raakt: de eerste manupulatie geeft aan welke centrale men hebben moet. Tot duver heeten die nog “Noord”, “Zuid”en “Centrum”, maar in het vol-automatische systeem krijgt elke Centrale een nummer in plaats van een naam. Men bemerkt: dit systeem is berekend op 10 nummers: er is dus plaats voor 10 Centrales! Noord is 1, Zuid is 2, Centrum 3. De tweede manipulatie – draaien tot aan de nok! – geeft aan de duizendtallen van het nummer dat men wil opbellen, – de derde de honderdtallen, de vierde de tientallen, de vijfde de eenheden. Elk cijfer

tot de 10.000 toe (9999) kan dus worden gevormd in elke Centrale. Het systeem geeft dus een capaciteit van 9.999 abonné’s in elke Centrale: met de drie bestaande Centrales kunnen we dus nu komen tot 30.000 aangeslotenen en dit getal kan door aanbouw van nieuwe Centrales tot 100.000 worden opgevoerd. Derhalve: wie wil opbellen Zuid 8729 zat eerst z’n vinger in de 2 en draait tot de nok. Dan loslaten, de schijf springt terug. Dezelfde manipulatie volgt nu in de 8, vervolgens in de 7, dan in de 2 tenslotte in de 9. Is er vijfmaal “overgehaald”, dan is de verbinding vanzelf tot stand gekomen! Zooals gezegd steeds vijf maal draaien! Staan er dus in den telefoongids tusschen letter en nummer een of meer streepjes dan moet men daarom zooveel maal vanaf 0 draaien als er streepjes zijn. C —-4 wordt dus opgebeld door achtereenvolgens 3, 0, 0, 0, 0 en 4 te kiezen. Nog iets. De Rijkstelefoniste kan men bereiken voor het aanvragen van ’n interlocaal gesprek door 5 maal achtereen vanaf 7 te draaien.

Nu ja – ’t zal wel eens niet lukken, d’r zal wel eens een “storing”zijn, en dàn kunt u onder geen omstandigheid meer de telefoonjuffrouw uitveteren, want die is er niet meer…..maar daar komen we wel overheen!
Hoofdzaak is, dank zij de voortvarendheid van de Amsterdamsche telefoondirectie krijgt de hoofdstad een net, dat zoo modern mogelijk is, dat op de grootst-mogelijke expansie is berekend, dat het niet meer te ontberen nut der spreekdraad-gemeenschap inderdaad binnen ieders bereik brengt en technisch zoo hoog staat als de meest-vervolmaakte telefoonnetten in het buitenland.[:en]An article on the very first use of automatic telephones here in the Netherlands. I came across this article by accident, looking for something else. It was in a lot of documentation I got from another collector. It is the original issue from 1922.

The telephone pictured was probably never used in Amsterdam at that moment. It is a Siemens & Halske ZBSA 11 from 1911. By the time Amsterdam went fully automatic, its successor was in production, the ZBSA 19.

Below is a transcription of the original text, translated in English. The Dutch text is rather archaic and uses old style spelling. I have tried to stay true to that as best as I can.

Next a desk telephone according to the fully automatic system and above a wall telephone, such as the ones that the Municipal Telephone service in Amsterdam will place with their subscribes as of this month.

It is not exceptionally courteous and ‘t is also slightly unjust, but above that it may be a confirmation of the adagio that the new is not always better than the old….. but still it is a fact that many impatient tradesman and shopkeeper or office clerk will sigh with relief when he will hear: we will lose the telephone ladies!

Because that is what is about to happen.

And above we introduce to you…. the “mechanical telephone ladies” inside your telephone-self, such as us and you, one somewhat earlier, the other later, will receive them in Amsterdam in their home: the “fully automatic” telephone, that will “make” the connection you wish without the use of the lady of the exchange, without human intervention.

Soon the in the exchange “Centrum” the installation for the numbers 6000 to 8000 will be ready. This expansion has been equipped for the use of the above pictured telephones. In the future such an apparatus will be issued to subscribers that receive a Centrum number as much as possible. Furthermore it is planned that subsequent groups of 100 numbers of the exchange panels, on which the ladies established connections, will be phased out and transferred to the fully automatic system until slowly, when every exchange is converted tot this system, all subscribers will have become their own telephone lady and the exchanges will contain nothing more that self-switching and relaying, machines, and self-connecting instruments.

Life Illustrated is tasked to inform the subscribers already, who will receive their automatic telephone any day now, about the workings of these telephones. Just look at the photographs: on each of them a disc is mounted, that turns spring loaded in the common direction…….same as the sun, as they say. That disc has 10 holes, corresponding to 10 numbers. Who now wants to call another, always has to turn that disc five times until the finger touches the stop: the first manipulation determines the exchange you want. Until now these were called “North”, “South” and “Central”, but in the fully automated system each exchange gets a number instead of a name. One notices: this system accommodates 10 numbers: so there is room for 10 exchanges! North is 1, South is 2 and Central 3. The second manipulation – turn until the stop! – gives the thousands of the number called, – the third the hundreds, the fourth the tens, the fifth the units. Each

number up to 10.000 (9999) can thus be made in every exchange. This system has a capacity of 9.999 subscribers in each exchange: with three existing exchanges we can accommodate 30.000 subscribers and this number can be expanded through the addition of newer exchanges to 100.000. In this manner: he who wants to call South 8729 puts his finger in the 2 and turns until the stop. Then let go and the disk springs back. The same manipulation follows for 8, subsequently 7, than in the 2 and finally in the 9. After turning five times, the connection will have been established by itself! As said, turn five times every time! When there are dashes in the telephone guide between letter and number, then one has to turn 0 for as many times as there are dashes. Oh well – sometimes this will go awry, there will be a “malfunction” and then you can no longer under any circumstance tell the telephone lady off, because she will not be around any longer……but we will get over that!

The main thing is, that thanks to the expeditiousness of the Amsterdam telephone board, our capital will get a network, as modern as possible, that is prepared for the greatest expansion possible, that will bring the unmissable use of the speaking wire within anyone’s reach and is technically on the same altitude as the most perfect telephone networks abroad.[:]
