Certainly this is one of the more iconic novelty phones. Allegedly it was based on, or at least inspired by, the Mae West lips sofa by Salvador Dali. I am not sure if this is really the case. I have not been able to find proof for this connection. Furthermore the shape of the phone is somewhat different from the sofa. After all lips are lips, so similarities are to be expected.
It is an all plastic telephone of the gondola type, with a ringer and keyboard in the base and receiver and transmitter in the handset, connect by a curly cord which has standard RJ connectors.
It has many names such as Red Lips, Hot Lips, Mae West, Lips and was marketed under various brands and model numbers such as Telequest Hot Lips, Mybelle 109, Telemania Lips, brandless WX-3016, Posantel KXT-108, of course also the Silly Gifts Red Lips and undoubtedly many more.
It has been in production for decades. The Telequest version goes back to at least the 1980s, as it has a copyright of 1984.
Most often found in red, it comes in various colours like pink, purple, flesh, gold, chrome, metallic blue, metallic pink and probably more. There are even versions covered in fake plastic diamonds of various colours.
I usually tend to avoid novelty telephones. There are so many of them and they are often cheaply made. Most of the time I find them ugly and technologically they are not interesting. This one however has been on my wish list for a long time, because it is such an iconic telephone. Can you imagine a collection of red telephones not having this one?
As it is quite abundant I have seen many over the years, but quite often over priced. I had been waiting until the right one came along and in this case it was perfect: 10e, original box, in good and almost new condition and near enough to pick it up myself. So there it is finally , my red lips telephone.
