Developed from the GPO 162, the first bakelite bakelite telephone in the GPO inventory, which in turn was developed from the Siemens Brothers Neophone. The main difference between the 162 and the 232 is the addition of the speaking coil, which makes the 232 an autonomous telephone, albeit without a ringer. Introduced in 1934 it needed a separate bell unit, which was usually mounted on the wall, but could also be bolted under the 232. This model stayed in production until 1957.
